"Staying Put's Exciting News: October 2009

Victims of Forced Marriage will benefit from a grant of £20,000 across the Bradford District. This exciting development is funded by the Ministry of Justice, who is taking innovative steps in partnership with the domestic abuse sector to protect victims of forced marriage.

Staying Put is a company limited by guarantee and registered charity. Staying Put was established in 2001, covering Bradford Metropolitan District. It's overall aim is to promote the health and mental well being of women and their children experiencing domestic abuse in the Bradford District through the direct provision of outreach support, ongoing practical and emotional support in the provision of specific "target hardening" services.

This is good news for Bradford as the county court is one of only fifteen county courts to be designated to deal with applications for Forced Marriage Protection Orders (FMPO). The six month pilot will enable us to support victims of forced marriage, enabling them to use the FMPO with the aim of empowering them to live independently free from the fear of violence and abuse.

Bradford local authority as well as other key stakeholders in the domestic abuse sector support this initiative. This development will strengthen and streamline our existing IDVA services, so that women who are vulnerable and finding the process of dealing with the difficulties of a forced marriage frightening can gain a service from one point of contact. Scope of the Pilot:

1. The Pilot will run for six-months commencing from 01 September 2009

2. The FMPO-IDVA service will receive £20,000 towards the salary costs of a dedicated FMPO-IDVA from within existing staff. This amount equates to the salary of a part-time FMPO-IDVA.

3. This Pilot will provide an opportunity to make an early assessment of how referrals are made to the third sector; empowering communities to access this vital service with the aim of supporting applicants before and after the protection order is made. The effectiveness of the IDVA role will be reviewed at the end of the pilot period. For further information on this development please contact

Investor in People – Achieving an additional Award wining recognition of Bronze Status – July 2009

This was the first review of Staying Put since it became an Investor in People in 2006, Staying Put is pleased to announce an outstanding achievement of an additional Investor in People recognition of Bronze Status.  This status represents only the top 1% of recognised IIP and this achievement would not have been possible without the dedication of staff, management and board members.

The report below was presented to Staying Put by YHAL with the following summarised points:

“Since the last assessment it is really clear that Staying Put has stepped up a gear in terms of strategic thinking and this is particularly evident in the fact the learning and development plan is driving the capability of the team for the long term future of the organisation. There is a feeling of trust and respect for management.  The strategy for development includes a clear plan for developing staff into new roles and embracing new challenges”.

“Managers are effective and capable; despite the new management structure only just being put into place there were many examples of how the Seniors (Team Leaders) and Deputy Manager are being effective in taking their people forward and supporting their development”.

“Social responsibility is at the heart of the organisation.  The organisation has developed specific areas of specialism or ‘champion’ roles.  Each of these roles has an impact on how the organisation approaches certain aspects of social responsibility such as the Disabilities Champion whose role is to ensure that all stakeholders have fair access to all the services offered”

“The culture of the organisation supports learning.  Staff have a formal mechanism in their appraisals and supervisions for discussing and planning their learning and development but the culture of Staying Put encourages everyone to share their knowledge and learning.  As a result of this people feel truly that they are able to contribute above and beyond their own role, they feel positive about making decisions which may affect others and feel empowered to challenge thinking and practice”.

“Teamwork is key to Staying Put’s success and there is a very strong culture of working as a team.  There were many examples of how staff support each other and how they share knowledge and expertise.  There is a feeling of trust and respect for each other”.

Team Feedback:

“I know that there are time restraints as [my manager] has an operational role too but she is very supportive and coaches me when I am lacking confidence.”

“… [Staying Put] is keen for me to develop.”

“As a manager I need to be a role model, I set an example regarding working hard, being available, empowering others to make decisions, sharing my knowledge and encouraging others to share theirs too.”

Staying Put would like to thank all staff and management and Board members who support and embrace the ethos and values of continued learning for all the staff hence supporting the achievement of the award.  Finally our stakeholders whose continued support and contribution has enabled Staying Put to move forward from strength to strength and to CMS Consultancy who assisted us directly with the Investors in People programme.
